Outing 1 - Starting a New Year
We just had our first outing of the year and had the opportunity to be able to catch up with the students and also meet new ones! We have five sites this quarter + a new site with ARC on Saturday (started last month and is unfortunately going on break soon until January). Some of the students remembered the coaches and were excited to see them again, which was very heartwarming. Activities this week were pretty simple and allowed new coaches and students to be able to get to know each other. We also had the students create an "About Me" poster where they drew or cut out images from magazines/advertisements of what they liked or mattered to them. As the quarter rolls in, I'll do my best to have weekly updates/recaps on the outings.
See you next week!
The students continue to surprise us coaches with their knowledge and enthusiasm on our third outing! They were extremely receptive to what we had to teach on the topic of hygiene.
Throughout the week, us coaches introduced the components of daily hygiene in a fun but informational manner. Students attempted to clean their paint-filled hands with hand sanitizer, only to realize that it isn't as effective as washing their hands with soap and water! They also tried to clean peanut butter off their hands, learning that if they kept their fingers together, peanut butter would still be left between their fingers. This was a representation of their teeth and what happens when they don't floss!
We also gave the students some time to sit back and work on a hygiene crossword puzzle and were pleased when the students became really determined to complete the puzzle. They had fun exploring familiar and new terms and concepts relating to hygiene. Us coaches then tackled the concepts of male and female hygiene; although this wasn't as interactive and fun as the other activities, the students kept their interest and learned quite a few things!
Last but definitely not least, we performed skits displaying characters with both good and bad hygiene. It was up to the students to determine which character was hygienic and which one wasn't (i.e. sneezing into their arm vs. into their hands). The student were quick to catch on and made very accurate judgments on what was hygienic.
The students learned a couple things from our past week of outings. For most of the hygiene concepts we introduced, the students seemed to already have an elementary understanding beforehand, but a friendly reminder doesn't hurt!
Our outing, once again, was a great success, and we can't wait to discuss mental health in our next outing!
Our second outing of winter quarter was a great success! We, as coaches, are one step closer to helping our students in attaining a healthier lifestyle.
The past week, we introduced our students to a balanced nutritious meal, healthier snack alternatives, and means of obtaining such foods. We accomplished these while making sure the students had a good time! We encouraged the students to create their own restaurant menus, which would consist of three healthy balanced meals. The students learned what a balanced meal looked like by filling their own plates with the correct proportions of grains, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and proteins. We went on scavenger hunts in grocery stores, where students located healthy foods including milk, pasta, apples, and more! We also must not forget about the mystery food tasting, where students blindly tasted healthy foods. We were pleased when students loved foods like yogurt, carrots, and soy milk!
It wasn't only the students that learned...us coaches learned a lot from the past week also. We learned that a lot of the students are already eating very healthily, maybe even more so than us ourselves!
All in all, with the hard work of the coaches and the enthusiasm of the students, our outings in the past week couldn't have been better!
