Outing three was focused on nutrition, so we started off with a grocery store scavenger hunt at Vons. It turned out to be quite a competitive activity as all the different teams tried to find the items as fast as possible. Nobody seemed to know where the quinoa was located in the store... I think we know what that means. After the scavenger hunt, we had a nice discussion about the mentality of healthy eating and healthy alternatives to some preferred options.

Our second outing focused on physical health and exercise. We started out by doing some stretches and talking about possible exercises we could do to stay fit without a gym. One of the quieter students actually got down and started doing perfect push-ups to demonstrate. Another student immediately got down and started doing clapping push-ups! Afterwards, we played basketball and discovered that some of the students were really good. We also did some yoga and basic martial arts since two of our coaches have experience in them and were willing to teach everyone. Although it was a tiring today, all of us had a great time and got to know each other better. While this group usually likes to be active, their favorite part of the outing was actually just sitting and talking to the coaches.
This quarter focuses on health and hygiene and reinforcing good habits. We were able to catch up with the students this week (and meet new friends) with icebreaker games. As part of an activity, students broke up into two teams and each team "mummified" a member and wrapped them up in toilet paper! Towards the end of the outing, we even got a quick dance lesson from one of our students! We all had a blast and it was nice to see her open up and teach the class her favorite dance. The students are very excited to participate in the health/hygiene curriculum with StRIVE, and we are all looking forward to this new quarter.
We just had our first outing of the year and had the opportunity to be able to catch up with the students and also meet new ones! We have five sites this quarter + a new site with ARC on Saturday (started last month and is unfortunately going on break soon until January). Some of the students remembered the coaches and were excited to see them again, which was very heartwarming. Activities this week were pretty simple and allowed new coaches and students to be able to get to know each other. We also had the students create an "About Me" poster where they drew or cut out images from magazines/advertisements of what they liked or mattered to them. As the quarter rolls in, I'll do my best to have weekly updates/recaps on the outings.
See you next week! The students continue to surprise us coaches with their knowledge and enthusiasm on our third outing! They were extremely receptive to what we had to teach on the topic of hygiene. Throughout the week, us coaches introduced the components of daily hygiene in a fun but informational manner. Students attempted to clean their paint-filled hands with hand sanitizer, only to realize that it isn't as effective as washing their hands with soap and water! They also tried to clean peanut butter off their hands, learning that if they kept their fingers together, peanut butter would still be left between their fingers. This was a representation of their teeth and what happens when they don't floss! We also gave the students some time to sit back and work on a hygiene crossword puzzle and were pleased when the students became really determined to complete the puzzle. They had fun exploring familiar and new terms and concepts relating to hygiene. Us coaches then tackled the concepts of male and female hygiene; although this wasn't as interactive and fun as the other activities, the students kept their interest and learned quite a few things! Last but definitely not least, we performed skits displaying characters with both good and bad hygiene. It was up to the students to determine which character was hygienic and which one wasn't (i.e. sneezing into their arm vs. into their hands). The student were quick to catch on and made very accurate judgments on what was hygienic. The students learned a couple things from our past week of outings. For most of the hygiene concepts we introduced, the students seemed to already have an elementary understanding beforehand, but a friendly reminder doesn't hurt! Our outing, once again, was a great success, and we can't wait to discuss mental health in our next outing! ![]() Shelby is a third year majoring in Microbiology. She's from Torrance, California and loves to surf and paint in her limited free time. Shelby joined StRIVE to become more involved in her local community and strengthen her leadership skills. So far, her favorite part of StRIVE is getting to know the students at her outings a little more each week. She has been nominated for her willingness to step up to the challenge. Although she has only been with StRIVE for the past few weeks, she has worked with a nonverbal student with considerable success. Engaging the student in our activities, she has allowed the student to demonstrate that he understands our lessons and that he is gaining a valuable mentorship. Our second outing of winter quarter was a great success! We, as coaches, are one step closer to helping our students in attaining a healthier lifestyle. The past week, we introduced our students to a balanced nutritious meal, healthier snack alternatives, and means of obtaining such foods. We accomplished these while making sure the students had a good time! We encouraged the students to create their own restaurant menus, which would consist of three healthy balanced meals. The students learned what a balanced meal looked like by filling their own plates with the correct proportions of grains, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and proteins. We went on scavenger hunts in grocery stores, where students located healthy foods including milk, pasta, apples, and more! We also must not forget about the mystery food tasting, where students blindly tasted healthy foods. We were pleased when students loved foods like yogurt, carrots, and soy milk! It wasn't only the students that learned...us coaches learned a lot from the past week also. We learned that a lot of the students are already eating very healthily, maybe even more so than us ourselves! All in all, with the hard work of the coaches and the enthusiasm of the students, our outings in the past week couldn't have been better! |
